Project Overview
We were appointed to remove a mature sequoia tree located next to a small block of flats in Godstone. The tree stood close to parking spaces, a block of garages, and within falling distance of a nearby road- making it a high-risk site requiring careful planning and specialist equipment.
The Challenge
A detailed inspection carried out by a tree consultant, including Picus tomography and resistograph testing, identified significant stem and basal decay. The results confirmed that the tree was structurally compromised and unsafe to retain.
Due to its size and location, the tree posed a serious risk to:
- Parked vehicles
- Nearby structures, including garages
- Passing traffic and pedestrians
The confined space and sensitive surroundings meant that traditional felling methods were not suitable, and any work needed to be carried out with precision to avoid damage.
Our Solution
We carried out a sectional dismantle of the tree using a crane, allowing for controlled removal of each part.
Key elements of the operation included:
- Carefully dismantling the tree in sections from the top down
- Using a crane to lift and lower large branches and timber safely to the ground
- Protecting the tarmac car park and surrounding structures by avoiding free-fall cutting
- Removing all timber efficiently using a large tractor-mounted bin
This approach ensured maximum control throughout the operation, particularly given the tree’s condition and location.
The Outcome
The tree was removed safely and efficiently, with no damage to the surrounding area.
Results included:
- Complete elimination of the identified safety risk
- Full protection of nearby structures, vehicles, and surfaces
- A clean and controlled worksite throughout the project
- All arisings sustainably processed and reused as biomass
